Alcohol Use Disorder: A Treatable Chronic Medical Condition That Should Be Addressed Through Evidence-Based Public Health Initiatives

Policymakers and public health officials have a critical role to play in reducing excessive alcohol use and alcohol use disorder, says the American College of Physicians in a new policy. Excessive Alcohol Use and Alcohol Use Disorders: A Policy Brief of the American College of Physicians, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, says that barriers need to be removed to accessing treatment and more needs to be done to reduce binge drinking and heavy drinking among young adults and other high-risk populations.


Analyzing Annals

Cumulative All-Cause Mortality in Diverse Hispanic/Latino Adults. A Prospective, Multicenter Cohort Study and Shedding Light on the Health of Latino Populations in the United States

Using a prospective, multicenter cohort (the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos), the authors of this study describe all-cause mortality across different U.S. Hispanic/Latino groups and how it is affected when sociodemographic, acculturation-related, lifestyle, and clinical factors are accounted for. The editorialists discuss the findings and identify areas for future research that will provide better understanding of acculturation and lifestyle factors that contribute to different patterns of mortality among Latino subgroups.

Primary Care Panel Over Dinner

The internal medicine interest group at Loyola University of Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, Maywood, organized a primary care panel with other interest groups including OB/GYN, med/peds, emergency medicine, and family medicine. Over 50 students were provided dinner while ten panelists explained the array of primary care careers available and spoke about their professional paths.
